Mere has a big heart and a superb location. Nestling beneath the downs and just a stone’s throw away from the borders of Somerset and Dorset, this pretty Wiltshire village is steeped in history and full of secrets and surprises. In 1651, Charles II rested in Mere after his defeat in the Battle of Worcester. Today visitors can still enjoy a welcome break in this delightful spot and explore winding lanes, woodland tracks and open downland. Discover the wealth of flora and fauna, historic houses, archaeological sites and glorious gardens. If you are feeling a little more energetic, you can also have a go at clay pigeon shooting and nearby there’s riding, angling and golf. There is also an excellent choice of cycle routes, ranging from leisurely rides to more challenging expeditions. Visit Stourhead’s enchanting gardens which are less than three miles from the town centre, the White Sheet Nature Reserve and the Lynchets (ridges or ledges formed by ancient ploughing on the hillsides). The stunning cities of Wells, Bath and Salisbury are all less than one hour’s journey time away, making Mere an excellent place for a short break.
