Chinese to take-away a good impression of Salisbury

South Wiltshire hopes to welcome more Chinese tourists

21 August 2008

While the eyes of the world are focused on a certain international sporting event in China, tourism officers in Salisbury have been busy promoting the area to the hosts of the games.

Salisbury & Stonehenge Tourism Partnership are participating in a new campaign initiated by Tourism South East which is aimed at attracting greater numbers of Chinese visitors to Britain.

The 'GO! China' 2008 programme will see Salisbury and south Wiltshire promoted at exhibitions such as China International Travel Mart in Shanghai in November, in China Holidays 'Hello Britain' guide, on Tourism South East's Chinese website (hosted in China), and highlighted in material distributed in Beijing this month.

The area will also play host to familiarisation trip for the press and travel trade from China.

Bryn Jones, Salisbury's Tourism Manager says: "We are really pleased to be able to be a partner in this new campaign. China is a strong emerging tourism market, and Salisbury and south Wiltshire has a high profile in the country as Stonehenge is well known and recognised by the Chinese as a British icon. The closing of the games in Beijing will feature Britain in the handover ceremony, raising the profile of our country in China.

"We already produce a Mini Guide to our attractions in simplified Chinese which is available online on our website www.visitsalisbury.com and at our tourist information centres in Salisbury, and hope to welcome more Chinese groups and individuals to our medieval city in the years to come".
