Lydiard House is the delightful yet little known ancestral home of the Viscounts Bolingbroke and lies in beautiful 18th Century parkland.
Rescued from ruin by the Swindon Corporation in 1943, the palladian house has been lovingly restored.
As one of Wiltshire's smaller stately homes, the house benefits from a highly intimate atmosphere.
Visitors are free to wander at leisure throughout the elegant ground floor apartments where ornate plasterwork and original family furnishings are preserved alongside portraits and photographs of the St John family.
Lydiard's curious 'Blue Closet' is devoted to the 18th century society artist Lady Diana Spencer who shares a common ancestry with the late Princess of Wales.
The house also contains a fascinating 17th Century painted window by Abraham Van Linge and has over 100 pieces of exquisitely painted figures.
For the first time in centuries visitors can now enjoy the park's ornamental 18th Century Walled garden.
The adjacent parish church of St Mary is one of England's finest small churches.
Lydiard House & The Walled Garden are open 1st March-31st Oct Tues-Sun 11:00-17:00, 1st Nov-28th Feb Tues-Sun 11:00-16:00. The park is open daily dawn to dusk
