Avebury Manor Reborn
In 2011 Avebury Manor was the subject of a unique collaboration with the BBC. The lives and stories of the house’s many owners were brought to life by the use of interior design, including the creation of many new pieces reflecting the skills of local craftsmen. The project’s aim was to create a unique experience – visitors are encouraged to relax with a book in the armchairs, listen to the gramophone or even try out the beds.
• Don’t miss the hand painted Chinese wallpaper in the 18th century dining room
• Soak up the atmosphere of a 1930’s cocktail party
• Have a game or two in the Billiards Room
• Relax on the four poster and listen for the sounds of dawn in the Tudor Bedroom
Avebury Manor Garden
Always a relaxing and tranquil place to wander, the garden at Avebury Manor owes much of its current layout to Mrs Norah Jenner, who lived here from 1902 to the mid 1920's. Mrs Jenner, who worked within the existing garden design, dating from around 1700, removed overgrown planting and created a garden of hidden delights and beautiful vistas.
New for this year is the Victorian kitchen garden. Previously hidden and overgrown, we have been working to replant some of the fruit and vegetables which would have fed the Manor House in the past.
Don’t miss a favourite garden moment:
Stumble across the tiny pet cemetery, a poignant reminder of the pets who would have had Avebury Manor as their playground.
