Stanford - A Celebration

2024 marks the centenary of the death of Sir Charles Villiers Stanford; Salisbury Cathedral will be marking this in a week-long celebration of his music and legacy. Stanford composed many great works for choir and organ that are performed regularly in services both here and in Churches and Cathedrals all around the world, but as well as this he taught many of the 20th Centuries greatest English composers. From 6 to 12 May 2024, Salisbury Cathedral Choir and others will sing entirely music by Stanford and his pupils in services and concerts.
Highlights of the week:
Monday 6 May – Evensong, sung by Truro Cathedral Choir, directed by James Anderson-Besant including Stanford’s Evening Service in A and For lo, I raise up
Wednesday 8 May – Organ Concert, played by John Challenger. Including Stanford’s Fantasia and Toccata in D minor
Saturday 11 May – Choral Concert, Salisbury Cathedral Choir with Choir of St Matthew’s Westminster. Including Vaughan Williams’ Lord, Thou hast been our refuge, a selection of Stanford’s Bible Songs and Stanford’s Latin Magnificat
There will also be daily Evensongs as well as Mattins and Eucharist on Sunday 12 May. These services will include Stanford’s Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in C, A and Bb as well as anthems and services by Stanford pupils; Ireland, Vaughan Williams and Wood.
