CORSHAM: POLDARK, PEACOCKS AND SO MUCH MORE
24 September 2015
On the fringe of the Cotswolds, between Chippenham and Bath, is the market town of Corsham. Surrounded by timeless Wiltshire countryside this town is famed for its historical buildings, traditional village style and peacocks!
Corsham owes its prosperity to the wool trade and quarrying of golden Bath stone, although it is more recently recognisable for featuring in BBC One’s hugely popular Poldark series, which aired to rave reviews earlier this year.
The historic High Street, which featured in the series, is full of Georgian properties, and has a wide variety of independent retailers. It is also where you will find colourful, noisy, peacock residents, who roam throughout the town centre.
The Town Hall plays host to a behind the scenes photographic ‘Poldark’ exhibition by local photographers. Open Monday to Friday from 9am-4.30pm, the exhibition is free.
At one end of the High Street is stately Corsham Court, set in Capability Brown landscaped gardens. At the other end, discover the Lady Margaret Hungerford Almshouses and Schoolroom. This is a very attractive and unique complex of 17th century almshouses, schoolroom, warden’s house and stables, beautifully restored with original furniture and features. Admission prices are £3 per adult and 50p per child.
Corsham is a thriving hub for music, arts and theatre, with The Pound Arts Centre at the heart of it. The Pound delivers performances, workshops, cinema and much more, plus a gallery and resident artists. There is a fully licensed café bar which serves delicious light meals and drinks.
The second Peacock Arts Trail, aims to promote the arts in Corsham and the surrounding area. This year it takes place from Saturday 3 October – Sunday 11 October. Over 50 artists are taking part and their work is available to buy or commission directly.
There are many restaurants, cafés and pubs in the town with local produce for sale at the town’s street market every Tuesday. With good transport links to explore the surrounding areas including Lacock and Castle Combe, Corsham makes an ideal base for a short break in Wiltshire.
There is a rich selection of affordable accommodation in the area including:
The Methuen Arms, located in Corsham town centre, is a 5-star, Georgian inn with 12 rooms and a 2 AA Rosette restaurant. Having recently won the Good Food Guide: Best pub food in Wiltshire award 2015 – 2016, it is an ideal place to stay whilst exploring the timeless wonders of Wiltshire.
