Never straying outside the county border, the new Mid Wilts Way (MWW), researched and designed by James Alsop from Wiltshire College, Trowbridge, is a 55 mile route that takes in some of Wiltshire's finest countryside and downland areas.
At its eastern end the walk starts/finishes in the exquisite village of Wootton Rivers, located between Marlborough and Pewsey, just to the East of the Pewsey Downs. 55 glorious miles away the route starts/finishes right in the heart of the pretty village of Mere; the Angel Corner Café serving as the ideal spot to contemplate what has been achieved or what lies ahead.
Downland hill tops provide dramatic views for much of the way, and nine lovely villages offer a rich, contrasting alternative, along with delightful refreshment and accommodation options.
The route is now officially open and has been waymarked with discrete MWW discs. It has been divided into ten individual stages, which can be walked on an out and back basis if preferred. These ten stages can be downloaded as PDF files at the links below or an official guidebook can be purchased (see below). To help you to plan your walks, you will also find a list of places to eat and drink along the route as a PDF file at the bottom of the page.
Finally, if you do take to the trail, please be aware of landowners concerns and avoid walking in large groups or with dogs, unless they are on a lead and under strict control.
Enjoy your walk, and don t be surprised if the prospect of walking the entire route becomes an irresistible one!
Feedback on the walk would be most welcome, so if you have any comments to make, either good or bad, please contact James Alsop at kate-james@alsop189.fsnet.co.uk.
In contrast to the website information, the route is described from east to south-west (Wootton Rivers to Mere), in six stages, with careful concern for walkers accommodation and refreshment needs being incorporated into the section start and finish points.
The book is written by James Alsop and published by Ex-Libris Press, and runs to 80 pages. There is a sketch map as well as an introduction/overview for each section, brief captions of interest to inform the reader and generate interest in the stage ahead, and lots of pictures throughout.
The book can be purchased from local bookshops and TICs (price: £5.95) or online direct from the publisher (www.ex-librisbooks.co.uk/wiltshire) - no charge for postage. The ISBN is 978-1-903341-42-1.
