Salisbury > Salisbury and Stonehenge > Salisbury - the city in the countryside
Known as 'The city in the countryside', the magnificent medieval city of Salisbury has it all: historic streets and alleyways, charming half-timbered buildings, traditional English eating houses and characterful shopping streets, not to mention a superb range of attractions, including the UK's finest medieval cathedral.
Salisbury Cathedral offers one superlative after another, from the tallest spire in Britain and Europe's oldest working clock to the world's best-preserved Magna Carta. It stands in the largest medieval close in Britain, where you will also find award-winning museums and a superb National Trust property.
Salisbury's individual shops are complemented by regular street
markets and there's a great choice of arts and cultural venues too.
Don't miss a stroll along the Town Path across the water-meadows - the awe-inspiring sight of the Cathedral rising up from these lush, green fields has been described as 'Britain's best view'!

Salisbury in Detail, published by Salisbury Civic Society, price £15. Hard cover, 216 pages, 518 colour photos. ISBN 978-0-9512100-1-7.
This new book presents a portrait of Salisbury by focusing on the individual details which are combined to form individual buildings, which then together create the city. Only churches and chapels are not covered, as these would merit a separate book.
For both residents and visitors, the variety and richness of the book's images should convey a powerful picture of the quality and value of Salisbury's buildings.
