North west from Salisbury the picturesque Wylye Valley leads you through the villages of Great Wishford and the Langfords before arriving at Wylye itself.
Travelling south west from the city, the River Ebble runs along the delightful Chalke Valley, through the settlements of Coombe Bissett and Broad Chalke towards Ebbesbourne Wake and Alvediston. This is Cranborne Chase, historic hunting ground of the Saxon monarchs, with spectacular viewpoints en route to Tollard Royal.
Salisbury Plain is renowned throughout the world as the home of Stonehenge, but should you venture out to the villages which lie atop this grassy plateau, keep a look out for another of its residents, the Great Bustard, which is the world's largest flying birdand has recently been re-introduced to the area after an absence of many years.
