Mere and Stourhead
Mere has a big heart and a superb location! Nestling beneath the downs, just a stone's throw from the borders of Somerset and Dorset, this is a village steeped in history and full of secrets and surprise.
In 1651 Charles II rested here after his defeat in the Battle of 
Worcester and today you can still enjoy a welcome break in this delightful spot.
Every October Mere holds its Literary Festival - for details visit www.merewilts.org.uk - and nearby you can try your hand at clay pigeon shooting, angling or golf. There is excellent walking and horse riding along woodland tracks and open downland, while cycle routes around the local lanes range from leisurely rides to more challenging expeditions.
The landscape around Mere is characterised by the Lynchets - ridges or ledges formed by ancient ploughing on the hillsides. Just to the north of Mere lies the White Sheet Nature Reserve and less than three miles away you will find the pretty village of Stourton and the celebrated landscape gardens at Stourhead.
Looking further afield, the stunning cities of Wells, Bath and Salisbury are all less than one hour's drive away, making Mere an excellent base for a short break.
