Salisbury > Salisbury and Stonehenge > Outstanding stately homes and gardens
Tudor, Elizabethan, Palladian, Queen Anne: south Wiltshire's stately homes and manor houses reflect changes in English taste and fashion through the ages, while the landscape in which they sit varies from gardens on a grand scale with acres of magnificent parkland to smaller, more intimate settings.
Highlights include the world-famous gardens at Stourhead with their central lake and classical temples which are outstandingly beautiful at any time of year; Wilton House, where you will find the finest surviving 17th century stateroom in England;
the magnificent Manor House at Breamore, which was completed just before the Spanish Armada and remains to this day very much a family home; and Mompesson House, an architectural gem sheltering within the confines of Salisbury's Cathedral Close.
You may well recognise many of these stately homes and gardens from the big screen, as they are popular film locations.
