Cycling in south Wiltshire

With its gentle, undulating countryside and peaceful river valleys, south Wiltshire epitomises rural England at its very best. As yet a largely undiscovered secret, the area remains uncrowded and is ideal for exploring on two wheels.

Leaving the rat race behind you can cycle along our quiet country lanes at your own pace, free to stop off wherever and whenever you want. Visit a stately home or prehistoric site, stroll around one of our many charming towns and villages, or enjoy a well-earned drink at a friendly country inn - whether you are an experienced cyclist or an enthusiastic beginner you will find plenty of routes to suit your level of ability.

Many of our accommodation establishments are keen to offer a warm welcome to cyclists - by helping those arriving in inclement weather to dry their clothes overnight, for example, or providing secure, lockable and weatherproof cycle storage. They will also be happy to give information on the nearest cycle shops or provide advice on suitable routes from their location - just look for the Cyclists Welcome symbol on individual accommodation entries.

The city of Salisbury has been working hard to become more cycle-friendly. The number of cycle stands has been increased, the network of cycle routes is growing and the Salisbury Cycle Map is proving extremely popular with visitors.

Families may like to sample The Golden Way - a short circular ride through part of the Avon Valley and round the eastern edge of the city, taking in Old Sarum and the Cathedral along the way.

At the other end of the scale, the Wiltshire Cycleway takes in some of the county's most spectacular scenery, with suggested routes ranging in length from 70 to 160 miles.

On the Woodford Valley Circuit you can combine some of Wiltshire's finest villages with the River Avon and the ancient sites of Old Sarum and Stonehenge, while a delightful trip along the Wylye Valley and Grovely Ridge offers long or short options to suit your preference.

Other possibilities include the Avon Valley Explorer from the Vale of the White Horse via Stonehenge and Old Sarum to Salisbury Cathedral; the Wylye Valley Explorer from Salisbury via Wilton House to the market town of Warminster; and the Salisbury Plain Explorer around the Imber and Larkhill military ranges...

Or why not combine the last three into a spectacular three-day tour of South Wiltshire!
