Stourhead

Soak up rich autumn colours and picturesque scenery as you enter the National Trust grounds of Stourhead. Located on the Wiltshire-Somerset border, this 18th Century landscape garden is definitely one to see during the later months. Putting on a show, be sure to bring your camera and capture the beautiful display of reds, oranges, and golds as you wonder through Stourhead’s magnificent grounds. Discover hidden caves, grottoes, and classical temples as you explore along the lakeside, taking in the beautiful reflections of surrounding features.

Lacock

Take a short trip outside of Chippenham to the historic village of Lacock. Browse its many independent shops as you walk along cobbled streets before reaching the incredible Abbey; a quirky country house dating back to the 13th Century! Roam its stoned corridors and passageways and marvel at its gothic revival architecture, famously recognisable for its feature in films such as Pride and Prejudice and Harry Potter! Surrounding the grounds are plenty of wooded areas and gardens, with spacious parkland to enjoy a picnic as well. Finish your trip by entering the Fox Talbot Museum where you can discover the history of Photography including the first photographic negative, invented by polymath William Henry Fox Talbot in the early 19th Century.

Old Wardour Castle

For a spookier setting, why not learn about the bloodthirsty past at Old Wardour Castle. A terrible battle fought in 1643 when Parliamentarian forces besieged the castle for several weeks. The now unusual hexagonal ruins are viewed by many as it stands amongst its lakeside setting, protected by acres of woodland.

Lydiard House and Park

Visit Lydiard House and Park and discover the striking remains of a great country estate. Wander through the elegant state rooms, containing original family furnishings, portraits, and ornate plasterwork of the Viscounts Bolingbroke. Explore the other great features surrounding the Palladian House including a beautiful church, walled garden, and formal parkland.
