Short Break for Walkers

This two day or walking weekend break will take you on two delightfully quiet walks in very different landscapes. You could stay near Warminster, Horningham, Westbury, Trowbridge or Bradford on Avon for easy access to both walks. Equally, both walks can be reached within 40-45 minutes' drive from central Salisbury.

Day 1

Morning

Shearwater on the Longleat Estate, near Warminster (Walk 7on our Walking page).

Shearwater (credit: Steve Day)Walk around one side of Shearwater Lake on the Longleat Estate and then enjoy open fields and green lanes offering a wealth of flora and fauna. The walk is 10 Km/ 6.25 miles long and graded as moderate. It will take approximately 2½ hours to complete for the average walker.

Afternoon

Longleat Estate

Longleat House (credit: Steve Day)Longleat offers a plethora of things to see and do including plenty of venues providing food and drink and toilet facilities. The countryside around Longleat House is stunning and the Safari Park will take the best part of the afternoon to do it justice. You could equally choose to see the treasures and heirlooms which fill the house. Or just relax with a picnic near the lake or in the pasture-land and watch others at play.

Day 2

Morning

Bratton and Westbury White Horse, near Westbury (Walk 5 on our Walking).

Westbury White HorseWalk up to the biggest chalk horse in Wiltshire and get stunning views from this high vantage point. The walk also takes in 'Bratton Camp', an Iron Age hillfort. The walk is 6 Km/ 3.75 miles long and graded as moderate. It will take approximately 1½ hours for the average walker.

There is a pub in the village of Bratton which offers toilet facilities and would make a convenient lunch stop at the end of the walk.

Afternoon

Bradford on Avon - approximately 12 miles from Westbury - 20 minutes' drive

The Town Bridge in Bradford on Avon (credit: David Pegden)The afternoon offers a shopping treat in Bradford on Avon with a walk by the Kennet and Avon Canal if you still have plenty of energy! (You could hire a bicycle from the Lock Inn - every type of bike you could image available at the showroom opposite the Lock Inn - and cycle into Bath and back in a couple of hours - 10 miles each way.) Bradford has some delightful individual shops selling gifts, clothes, books and food as well as some top class antique shops. There are tea shops, pubs and restaurants to suit all tastes and this would make an ideal place to eat before returning home.
