As part of British Tourism Week from 15 – 19 March 2010, VisitWiltshire is holding a series of special events aimed at promoting tourism within the county.
Monday 15 March
Ø Explore Devizes Town Hall Lock Up – Between 10am and 3pm, visitors will be given a rare opportunity to explore the elegant interiors and galleries of Devizes Town Hall. The beautiful Georgian building will be open to all visitors to enjoy a free tour.
Ø Exclusive tour of Wadworth Brewery – At 10am visitors can book a special exclusive tour of Wadworth Brewery with head brewer, Brian Yorston. Brian will give a detailed insight into how the historic brewery works, including the traditional use of Shire horses for delivery of the ales. www.wadworth.co.uk . Normal admission charges apply.
Tuesday 16 March
Ø City tour of Salisbury – Enjoy a city look tour of Salisbury before a unique opportunity to meet the local Mayor for afternoon tea and cake. The tour costs just £4 per person. Departs from Salisbury Tourist Information Centre at 10.30am.
Ø Barrel making demonstration – Have you ever wondered how a beer barrel is made? You can now learn this fine art at a one-day demonstration by Alastair Simms, master cooper at Wadworth Brewery. The event also includes an introduction to sign-writing. Starts at 1pm. www.wadworth.co.uk
Wednesday 17 March
Ø The Mayor of Salisbury doing ’Work Experience’ – Pop into Salisbury Tourist Information Centre at 11am and pick up some tips on what to see and do from the local mayor! She knows the city better than anyone.
Thursday 18 March
Ø Mystery of Devizes Tour – Visitors can learn about the hidden secrets and stories of Devizes in a one hour guided tour from local historian John Girvan. Starts from Devizes Visitor Centre at 1pm. Tickets are £5.50 per adult and £3.50 per child.
Friday 19 March
Ø Wilton Windmill Tour – Located in the Marlborough Downs, Wilton Windmill is the only working windmill in Wessex. This special tour shows visitors how a traditional windmill works. There are also opportunities to buy products from the Windmill. The tour departs at 11am. Tickets are £2.50 per adult and £2 per child. Booking is essential.
Ø Talk by Chris Moon MBE – Chris delivers his moving, humorous and inspirational illustrated talk in the Salisbury Playhouse Salberg Studio in aid of Help the Heroes and Children’s Chance Charities at 7.30pm. Kidnapped by the Khmer Rouge and later losing an arm and a leg whilst de-mining in Mozambique, Chris ran the London Marathon less than a year after his accident. He has appeared on the Parkinson Show and is now a motivational speaker. Tickets cost £9.50 per person
British Tourism Week aims to raise national and international awareness of the size, value and importance of Britain's £114 billion visitor economy and its tourism industry.
In Wiltshire tourism contributes to a major part of the economy, with visitors spending well over £762 million per year in the county. This is equates to nearly 11 million day trips and 1.6 million overnight or extended trips.
Over 14,000 people in Wiltshire are employed in jobs related to the tourism industry ranging from those serving well known visitor attractions to the smallest bed and breakfasts tucked into tiny villages and hamlets.
British Tourism Week takes place from 15 to 21 March 2010, and a host of events have been organised throughout Wiltshire to celebrate the attractions of the county.
