VistWiltshire plays its part in encouraging international visitors

30 March 2010

VisitWiltshire is playing an active role in encouraging international visitors to the county following the introduction of four foreign language guides.

The French, Italian, Spanish and German mini guides are a summary version of VisitWiltshire’s English ‘What to do’ guide providing foreign visitors with information on a range of attractions from popular sites such as Stonehenge through to information about beautiful stately homes and gardens as well as places that will appeal to children.

Alun Williams, Head of Partnership, commented, “We have introduced these guides so that foreign language speakers can get a better idea of what they can see and do while visiting Wiltshire.  Given that the 2012 Olympic Games will be in the UK soon we are expecting a higher than average influx of visitors from the continent so these new guides are a timely introduction.

He continues, “We have worked closely with VisitBritain over the past couple of years, including hosting visits to Wiltshire for a number of foreign media and this is the latest step in welcoming international visitors to our county.”

Wiltshire is amongst the most popular UK destinations for overseas visitors thanks to attractions such as Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral.  In the past 12 months overseas visitors are estimated to have spent £78 million whilst staying in the county.  A figure VisitWiltshire is hoping to increase in the years to come.

Following on from the introduction of the guides VisitWiltshire is also planning on adapting its website, as Alun Williams highlights, “It is our long-term goal to provide website content in a growing number of foreign languages.  We will be uploading these brochures as PDFs and hope to be able to offer Chinese, Japanese, Russian and Polish versions later this year.”

VisitWiltshire Tourism Partnership provides tourism services on behalf of Wiltshire Council to support local businesses.  Membership has increased vastly over the past 12 months and there are now over 400 businesses under the VisitWiltshire banner.  Tourism is worth £762 million a year to the Wiltshire economy bringing more than 1.6 million staying visitors and some 11 million day trips.
