Salisbury Positions Itself As The Place To Holiday This Summer Thanks To A Host Of Exciting Events
14 April 2011
The city of Salisbury has plenty to attract visitors this summer thanks to a host of exciting new and established events which open from May 2011.
- The Salisbury International Arts Festival returns to the city once again for 16 days of non-stop entertainment themed around China, Dance and Air. During the Festival, which opens on 20May 2011 with a spectacular free air show from Argentina called Voala, visitors will be able to see performances from artists from around the globe. Everyone can enjoy theatre, dance, music, film, workshops and street theatre. On average around 50 per cent of the performances during the festival are free, including the opening night.
- Also opening on 20 May is a one off Constable Exhibition at Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum. The exhibition will remain in place until 25 September 2011, offering a unique opportunity to see many of the artist’s works under one roof for the first time in history. The whole display titled, Constable and Salisbury, will very much focus on his works of the Cathedral but will also include a selection of other pictures of famous landmarks including Old Sarum and Stonehenge. A few of these works come from private collections so it really is a one off opportunity to see paintings which may never be seen in Salisbury again. Visitors can also opt to join guided tours which will take them to local locations where Constable painted.
- Finally between 14 – 19 June 2011 Salisbury Cathedral will be the most fragrant part of Wiltshire thanks to a fantastic six day flower festival. The iconic building will be filled with thousands of flowers, colours and fragrance in a mix of contemporary, traditional and interpretative displays, masterminded by Chelsea Gold Medallists Michael Bowyer, Pam Lewis and Angela Turner and created by over 500 flower arrangers. One of the many Festival highlights will be a floral design inspired by Antony Gormley’s Flare II. This sculpture, a falling figure within a cloud of dense wire mesh, will be suspended from high in the Cathedral’s South Transept from 1 April until 2012.
