VisitWiltshire Chair Appointed To Swindon & Wiltshire LEP Board

2 February 2012

Peter Wragg, chairman of VisitWiltshire, has been appointed to the board of the newly created Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). The partnership plays a central role in determining local economic priorities, undertaking activities to drive economic growth and the creation of local jobs. It is also a key vehicle in delivering Government objectives for economic development and decentralisation.

Peter Wragg’s appointment emphasises the importance of Wiltshire’s visitor economy as one of the LEP’s five strategic priorities for achieving local economic growth. It further establishes VisitWiltshire’s role as the official Destination Marketing Organisation and Tourist Board for Wiltshire and Swindon. It is a great boost for VisitWiltshire, its 550 members and the wider tourism industry to have a seat on this key strategic body.

Mr Wragg expressed his delight at the appointment: “My appointment to the board of the newly created LEP is a terrific vote of confidence for VisitWiltshire Limited and reflects the importance of tourism to the Wiltshire economy. Our tourism priorities for the LEP will be to focus on sustaining and creating jobs, increasing tourism visits and spend and raising brand awareness. It is my goal to ensure that the needs of VisitWiltshire members are at the forefront of all activity undertaken via the LEP. I will also be ensuring that members of VisitWiltshire can continue to develop and maintain sustainable businesses through the activity and funding that we will be looking to secure.”

In addition, VisitWiltshire has also been confirmed as having board positions on both the Wiltshire Strategic Economic Partnership (WSEP) and the Swindon Strategic Economic Partnership (SSEP).

WSEP and SSEP are responsible to the LEP for implementing strategies determined by the LEP and as such have a direct involvement in managing activity and directing funding designed to stimulate economic growth activity across business sectors. David Andrews, VisitWiltshire’s Chief Executive and Peter Wragg its Chairman hold key positions on the board in both organisations ensuring that the needs of the tourism industry and those of VisitWiltshire members are at the forefront of activity at all times.
