Hundreds of tourism businesses in the West risk blank screens on their TVs when the region switches to digital in just under two months time, according to Digital UK.

Some hoteliers and B&B owners across Wiltshire have already fully converted televisions in all guest rooms to digital, but some owners have only partly switched and many are still relying completely on analogue signals. Switchover in the West region (covering Bristol, parts of Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire) starts on 24 March and completes on 7 April 2010. Bill Taylor, South West Regional Manager for Digital UK, said: "The final stage of switchover in the West TV region takes place immediately after the Easter weekend, so it's a really critical time in the tourism sector's calendar. My experience is that the big hotel chains take the long view and have plans in place; however, I do want to call on B&B and small hotel owners to take steps to prepare now. Many are fully prepared for switchover, or have upgrading to digital well underway, but some may not have made any plans. The vast majority of hotels, guest houses and B&Bs who have already made the switch have found it straightforward and say their guests have been happy with the extended choice offered by digital television."

Bill added: "Tourism is such an important sector to reach in the South West, as it accounts for a major part of the local economy. People expect a television in their room when they stay at a hotel or guest house. We are just less than two months from the start of switchover in the West TV region and the tourism industry must be prepared."

Digital UK has set up a special advice line (08458 455 455) and website (digitaluk.co.uk/propertymanagers) for tourism property managers, which gives details on the process, how to switch and the likely costs. Letters will also be sent directly to tourism businesses with advice and information.
