Wiltshire village of Lacock stars in BBC’s Cranford

20/11/07

The Wiltshire village of Lacock, with its cottages and inns dating back to the 15th century form a breathtaking backdrop to the BBC production of Cranford.

The village is much admired by film makers; the National trust village has played host to a variety of classic films from Pride and Prejudice to Harry Potter.

In Cranford, Dame Judi Dench leads a magnificent ensemble cast in a wonderful portrait of a real town on the cusp of great change. Based on three novels by Elizabeth Gaskell, the moving and funny five-part period drama of love, friendships, disappointments and tragedy is being broadcast on BBC One in November and December 2007.

Created by Sue Birtwistle and Susie Conklin, directed by Simon Curtis and written by Heidi Thomas, Cranford was filmed in a number of locations including Lacock, West Wycombe, Oxfordshire, Ashridge and Shepperton Studios.

"It is very apt that Lacock is featured regularly on the large and small screen, as Lacock Abbey was once the home of the pioneer of photography, William Henry Fox Talbot," says Dot Williams of Visit Wiltshire.

"The villages and attractions of Wiltshire have featured regularly as film and TV locations over the past few years, as backdrops to feature films and television dramas. Costume dramas such as Cranford bring thousands of visitors from across the globe to visit the county."
