If you love shopping then a visit to Salisbury is a must. People have been travelling to our city for hundreds of years to trade their wares. Our historic Charter Market takes place regularly in the heart of the city in our bustling Market Place. It dates back over 800 years and still brings people in to buy all manner of goods.

A Market City

Traditionally, the twice weekly Charter Market is held on Tuesdays* and Saturdays, filling the Market Place with stalls. During the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, the Charter Market is taking place every Saturday with social distancing measures in place. Find out more. Market traders sell an array of items from fresh produce and deli food to clothing and household goods. It’s a great opportunity to meet our friendly locals as well.

Other markets regularly come to the city including a fortnightly farmers’ market, a monthly vintage market and more recently the teenage market which takes place on average once a quarter.

The city also welcomes the Salisbury Christmas Market (this year, known as the Christmas Festival) every festive season, held in the historic Guildhall Square. More details of this year's events will be announced soon.

Keep an eye on our what's on pages for upcoming events.

(*except the third Tuesday in October)

A hive for independent shops

Salisbury is blessed with a wealth of independent shops specialising in everything from arts and crafts, fashion and homewares to specialist food, sports and health.

Notably these shops can be found on Fisherton Street, Winchester Street and the High Street, but why not visit our independent shops page which lists more of the wonderful independent businesses that can be found throughout the city? Our indies can help you find items you won’t get in your usual high street stores and you’ll find customer service that’s second-to-none.

Be sure to pay a visit to Fisherton Mill at the northern end of Fisherton Street– it’s one of the south’s largest arts emporiums where you can pick up something unique to remember your visit or take a well-deserved break at their award-winning café. On the first floor of the mill you can find resident artists in the various studios selling their handmade wares.

Salisbury Shopping Malls

There are three main shopping malls in the city centre:

  • The Cross Keys Arcade – home to TK Maxx, Richmond Classics, some cosy coffee shops, Wildwood and a selection of independent stores.
  • Old George Mall – with Marks & Spencer, Topshop, H&M, W H Smith, The Body Shop and many more of the big High Street brands.
  • The Maltings – home to several independent retailers as well as The Works and a Sainsbury’s supermarket.

On the outskirts of the city there are large retail shops on Southampton Road including Next, B&Q and Matalan and on Churchill Way West there is a large Waitrose Food & Home store as well as a Homesense, Smyths and Sports Direct.

Just three miles out of the city at Wilton is the Wilton Shopping Village which offers shopping at very competitive prices with a beautiful riverside setting. As well as big names such as Edinburgh Woollen Mill, Trespass and Cotton Traders, you will find a tranquil café, Roleplay World for children and a couple of independent stores. There is also on-site coach parking.

Find out more about the different shopping experiences you can have in and around Salisbury by browsing our website and look out for special events, such as the annual independents' week in early July.

The Salisbury Gift Card

Launched just over a year ago, the Salisbury Gift Card is a great way to support businesses in the city centre.

It works in the same way as any other shop gift card but can be spent in over 130 businesses in Salisbury city centre, including shops, restaurants, salons, entertainment venues, attractions and more.

Salisbury Gift Cards can be purchased online via www.salisburygiftcard.co.uk with free delivery being offered. Alternatively, gift cards can be purchased directly from Salisbury Information Centre, Salisbury Playhouse or The Salisbury Museum.

Salisbury BID fund the Salisbury Gift Card programme to support businesses, by helping to keep spend in the city and encourage additional footfall.

With a huge choice of spending options, the Salisbury Gift Card makes the perfect gift for everyone.
