Activities in Salisbury

Salisbury is often described as the city in the countryside, lending itself perfectly for some great outdoor activities. Within a short distance of the city you will find a wealth of things to do, lush green areas and our five rivers that flow through the area. Here are just some of the amazing activities that you can do in Salisbury…

Walking activities in Salisbury

Wiltshire has over 8,200 footpaths that you can explore and a lot of these fall into the Salisbury area.

There are long distance paths that begin in Salisbury including the Avon Valley Path (linking Salisbury to Christchurch along the River Avon) and the Clarendon Way (between Salisbury to the cathedral city of Winchester). Or, if you prefer something more leisurely then look out for shorter routes such as the Town Path walk from Queen Elizabeth Gardens over to the Old Mill at Harnham or a circular walk of Old Sarum.

Join local walking companies Alison Howell’s Foot Trails or Guided Walks in Wiltshire for guided walks in and around the Salisbury area and be guided by their expertise as you navigate your way through our beautiful countryside.

Cycling in and around Salisbury

Cycle along the Golden Way or one of the National Cycle Networks as they pass through Salisbury and south Wiltshire.

Bring your own bike along and enjoy aspects (or all if you fancy it) of the Wiltshire Cycleway as it criss-crosses our county. Mountain bike over some of our old cattle droves or join in with one of the frequent road cycling races that takes place in the area (keep an eye on our what’s on listings for events that are coming up soon).

Golf in and around Salisbury

There are several golf courses within a short distance of the city including the Salisbury & South Wilts Golf Club in Harnham, Rushmore Golf Club towards the south of the county, High Post Golf Course halfway between Salisbury and Amesbury, Tidworth Garrison Golf Club and a driving range on the outskirts of the city. So if golf is your thing then come and find out more on a visit to Salisbury. Many of our golf courses will also offer tuition to help you improve your game.

Leisure and fitness

If you love to keep fit then look out for the various leisure and fitness options available in Salisbury. Our main public leisure centre is Five Rivers, located on the outskirts of the city. Here you will find a swimming pool, fitness classes, an athletics track and much more.

Lots of sporting events take place in the area including the weekly Parkruns in Churchill Gardens (Saturday mornings for the general Parkrun, Sunday mornings for the family Parkrun). Keep an eye on our events listings for charity walks, running, cycling and other sporting events in the area.

High adrenalin activities in the Salisbury area

Get your pulse racing with some of our high adrenalin activities. Did you know you can skydive over the Salisbury area for some extraordinary views? GoSkydive are based at Old Sarum Airfield and offer the highest freefall diving zone in Wiltshire. Not far from Stonehenge, you can skydive with Skydive Netheravon where you can see across Salisbury Plain.

Take to the sky with Aerosaurus Balloons on a hot air balloon ride. Experiences take off from the stunning Larmer Tree Gardens, south of Salisbury. Soak up the views of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty from above, an ideal present for a special occasion.
