Car Free Days Out in Wiltshire

If you are tired of driving, or are visiting Wiltshire by public transport, there are several places you can visit without having to use a car. Below, we’ve put together some suggested car free days across the county:

Wilton

Travel into Salisbury by either train or coach and pick up one of the regular Salisbury Reds services to Wilton. After a short bus journey, hop off at Wilton. Here you can explore the Italianate Church, ruins of St Mary’s Church in the Market Place and much more! There are several options for eating out within the town too.

Stonehenge

There are several car free options on visits to Stonehenge. One option is to take the Stonehenge Tour Bus from central Salisbury or from Salisbury railway station and you’ll be dropped right at the visitor centre. Alternatively, cycle some of the byways and quiet country roads that lead you from Salisbury to the World Heritage Site. Download a map giving you details of the various routes you can take. See the Connecting Wiltshire website for details.

Bradford on Avon

Bradford on Avon sits on the rail line from Cardiff to Portsmouth, making it very easy to get to from both Bath and Salisbury. The station is just a short walk from the pretty town centre where you can explore some the town’s Saxon past, walk along the Kennet & Avon Canal or shop in the town’s many independent retailers.

The Vale of Pewsey

With train stations at both Great Bedwyn and Pewsey, it’s easy to get to the Vale of Pewsey by public transport. Stop at Great Bedwyn and enjoy a walk which takes in the Kennet & Avon Canal and passes both Crofton Beam Engines and Wilton Windmill or travel to Pewsey and enjoy canal side walks and other outdoor activities.

Salisbury

Arrive by train to Salisbury with regular services from London Waterloo, Bath Spa and Portsmouth. The city centre is a short walk from the railway station. Make time to explore Salisbury Cathedral and Magna Carta, the city museums, historic houses and more.
