Morning lecture series: endings and new beginnings in the works of Mozart and Strauss Mozart wrote his final piano concerto No 27 in the year he died, 1791, and some view it as a bittersweet farewell. Strauss on the other hand, aware of his earthly departure, wrote his masterpiece Metamorphosen as for 23 solo strings as a crushing lament. Prophetic or not there is a wonderful balance of hope and regret in this writing.
