Tell us a bit about yourself and your role at Wiltshire Museum

I am a retired secondary school teacher who specialised in Humanities, specifically Religious Studies and History. I am a volunteer with the Wiltshire Museum in Devizes, helping with education outreach and Exhibition stewarding. I have received training from the Museum in Dementia Awareness, and Autism Awareness.

What do you like best about your role there?

I enjoy contact with the public and have helped represent the Museum in outreach workshops among Senior groups and on the Museum Stall at community events. At the moment I am welcoming visitors to the Hardy’s Wessex exhibition at the Wiltshire Museum, having enjoyed visiting the three linked exhibitions at Salisbury, Poole and Dorset Museums.

Where are your favourite places to visit in Wiltshire and why?

My favourite places to visit in Wiltshire are the Stonehenge and Avebury Landscapes. They both contain far more prehistoric speculation and historic information than the average day-visitor could guess at.

Do you have any hidden Wiltshire gems that you'd like to share with our readers?

A hidden Wiltshire gem is the Devil’s Den on Fyfield Down, which is featured in the Museum’s current Hardy’s Wessex Exhibition. Hardy featured this location in a short story ‘What the Shepherd Saw’.

Where is your favourite Wiltshire picnic spot?

My favourite Wiltshire picnic spot is on Bratton Castle, above Westbury, which holds the White Horse famously painted by Ravilious and featured in the recent Exhibition of his paintings at Wiltshire Museum.

Where are your favourite places to eat out in Wiltshire?

My favourite places to eat out in Wiltshire are pubs. Rural pubs, which are abundant all over the county and serve quality menus and excellent regional beers.
