Escape the Everyday at the Red Lion Freehouse & Troutbeck Guest House
Welcome to the Red Lion Freehouse & Troutbeck Guest House. Tucked away through a quiet village road on the edge of Salisbury Plain, this unique country pub with rooms offers some of the best food, drink and accommodation in Wiltshire. With a restaurant attracting locals and destination diners alike, gorgeous guest rooms on the bank of the River Avon and no shortage of local activities, this country bolthole is the perfect place for a summer escape, whether you’re after a romantic getaway or a pint and pack of crisps with the family. No wonder it continues to collect awards from the Good Pub Guide, The Good Hotel Guide and Wiltshire Life, just to name a few!
The thatched, picturesque Red Lion is run by hands-on chef/owners Guy & Brittany Manning along with their close-knit team. With a background in fine dining, food has always been a priority however the team delights in maintaining a warm and welcoming atmosphere in which to enjoy this serious pub fare.
The modern British menu changes regularly, has simplicity at heart and is led by produce from the country’s top suppliers. Enjoy favourites like warm Cornish crab tart with dressed leaves to start or the long-standing favourite Chateaubriand of Wiltshire beef for two with hand-cut chips. The immaculately kept bar is entirely hand-picked, offering everything from a fine pint to a classy cocktail, including home-made cordials and over 30 wines by the glass. Enjoy your choices either in the bar or dining room areas or outside in the fabulous garden, perhaps amongst the raised vegetable beds or pigs. For more of an event, the private dining area upstairs can seat 12 of your closest.
Just steps away from the pub is the boutique guest house, boasting 5 supremely comfortable river front rooms. The converted bungalow sits just on the bank of the River Avon and within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; each of the rooms has a private deck from which to soak up the blissful country views or even cast a line into the little stretch of river. Inside, all of the modern comfort boxes have been ticked with Somnus beds, Bang & Olufsen entertainment systems and the odd rain shower or roll top bath. Some of the rooms can accommodate children and even a dog or two.
Wiltshire has much to offer for those wanting to explore, especially in the summer. For the sporty families, there are endless walking routes straight from the door and plenty of well-established cycling routes. The area is renowned for trout fishing and shooting, or just take a dip in the diving pond a bit down the path from the guest house (the very adventurous can even book a skydive just up the road!). Stonehenge is just around the corner, while slightly further afield is a list of National trust properties or gardens to visit, and the historic cities of Salisbury and Bath within easy driving distance. Plus, of course, there is always the option to simply watch the wildlife from your room!
