About

The Dog & Gun is a recently restored 17th century coaching inn at the heart of the Salisbury Plain where guests are guaranteed a warm welcome, cosy surroundings, fabulous food and cracking pints of beer. Comprehensively restored and rebuilt in recent years, this historic coaching inn reverberates with the sound of happy pub goers, diners and overnighters, oozing atmosphere with its wood burning stoves, exposed brickwork and flagstone floors.

Our 6 high-quality, en suite, letting rooms are contemporarily decorated whilst maintaining the historical charm of the building through features like the exposed brick and flint walls, original oak beams, vaulted ceilings, and open fireplaces.

A plentiful breakfast is always included with your stay, featuring half English’s if you can’t handle the full whack.

Sitting at the heart of the Salisbury Plain, the pub is surrounded by acres of open land. If it’s not being blown up by the military (avoid red flag areas), it’s a great place to have a wander and explore. If it’s the walking you’re here for, The Pewsey White Horse Loop is a good place to start – look out for one of the eight white chalk horses that can be seen on Wiltshire hillsides. Closer than Pewsey, and so more conveniently located, is Figheldean and a walk that takes you past Stonehenge and loops back. If you come to stay, you can find a map of these routes in your room.

Speaking of Stonehenge, you can’t really miss it – it’s just down the road and well worth a visit. It’s also worth discovering Britain’s tallest spire and the stunning grounds at Salisbury Cathedral.

Want to try something new? We recommend guided fly fishing and lessons in the nearby chalk streams and lakes.

Wind down back at the pub with seasonal, local food and decent booze. On the menu you’ll find a range of pizzas (nole pizza) as well as dishes such as stone-baked sole and a mixture of small plates; all of which complement a crisp pint perfectly. The offering at The Dog is cosy, relaxed and informal, which is something that the make-up of the pub really lends itself to.
