About

Discover Salisbury Museum
An award-winning independent museum housed in the magnificent medieval Grade I listed King’s House, directly opposite Salisbury Cathedral. The museum tells the story of Salisbury and the surrounding area from prehistory to the present day, showcasing rich historical and internationally acclaimed collections from Salisbury, Stonehenge, and South Wiltshire.

Wessex Gallery of Archaeology
Step into the world of ancient Wessex and uncover treasures that shaped Britain’s past. Discover Stonehenge in its regional and chronological context and see unique artefacts from the World Heritage Site. Encounter the Amesbury Archer, the most important early Bronze Age burial ever found in Britain, and explore the fascinating Pitt-Rivers Wessex Collection, which reveals how archaeology developed as a modern discipline.

Fine Art Collection
Admire works by celebrated artists such as J.M.W. Turner and Rex Whistler, part of a distinguished collection that reflects both local heritage and national artistic achievement.

Salisbury Gallery
Journey through Salisbury’s history from medieval times to the present day. Explore the city’s past through extraordinary objects, from everyday items recovered from historic sewers to Britain’s oldest surviving medieval giant, St Christopher. Discover the city’s story through artefacts such as the Scout Motor Car and objects from the World Wars, reflecting Salisbury’s spirit of innovation and resilience.

Potted History of Britain
In the magnificent King’s Room, explore six thousand years of British ceramics. The collection features over four thousand pieces of English pottery and porcelain, including notable Wedgwood items, locally made crockery from Dorset and Hampshire, and charming historic souvenirs crafted for the tourist trade.

Natural History
Delve into Salisbury’s natural heritage through an engaging collection of fossils, plant specimens, and taxidermy. The displays reveal the area’s natural history from the Jurassic period to the present day, offering insights into the ever-changing landscape and environment of South Wiltshire.

More to Explore
The museum also offers a lively programme of events, courses, and activities for all ages, along with regularly changing temporary exhibitions.
Visitors can relax and enjoy delicious cakes, meals and refreshments in the museum café, which overlooks the beautiful gardens and offers stunning views of Salisbury Cathedral.
