Creative Arts and Printmaking Summer School

About

After teaching printmaking at Marlborough College Summer School for the last three years, I'm delighted to be running my first ever Summer School from my printmaking studio in Rowde at The Mind Tree Cafe! Join me this summer for a variety of creative courses...

WEEK 1
Draw - Bookbinding, Ink Making & Sketches
Date: Tues 30th June - Fri 3rd July
Time: 10am til 4pm

WEEK 2
Approaches to Linocut
Date: Tues 7th July - Fri 10th July
Time: 10am til 4pm

WEEK 3
Complete Collagraph
Date: Tues 14th July - Fri 17th July
Time: 10am til 4pm

WEEK 1 - DRAW
Kick off the Summer with a creative immersion in Bookbinding, Ink Making & Drawing. This Week One course is designed for beginners and intermediate artists.

During the week, you will:

- Make your own inks from natural and traditional materials
- Explore drawing techniques with your handmade inks on various papers
- Learn bookbinding skills, creating journals, sketchbooks, or artist books
- Combine drawing and ink experiments into your handmade book
- Reflect on your creative process and develop ideas for ongoing practice.

By the end of the week, you'll leave with several handmade sketchbooks or journals, a collection of ink-based drawings, and the skills to continue combining drawing, ink making, and bookbinding independently.

WEEK 2 - APPROACHES TO LINOCUT
This 1-week immersive course introduces a wide range of linocut approaches, combining traditional and experimental methods to help you develop your own creative style and technical skills.

Over the week, you'll explore:

- Reduction linocut: carving a single block in stages for multi-layered prints
- Multi-plate printing: combining multiple blocks for complex compositions
- Jigsaw linocut: creating playful, interlocking designs
- Chine collé: incorporating delicate papers into prints
- Mixed media approaches: combining linocut with drawing, collage, or painting
- Stencils, stamps, and embossing to add texture and pattern.

The course provides a supportive, hands-on environment, encouraging experimentation and personal expression. By the end of the week, you'll will leave with a range of original linocut prints, knowledge of multiple techniques, and the confidence to continue printmaking independently or in the studio.

WEEK 3 - COMPLETE COLLAGRAPH
Focussing on collagraph, monoprint, and mixed media printmaking, incorporating collage, pressed flowers, and natural materials - this week-long course explores texture, layering, and experimental approaches, encouraging you to combine traditional and contemporary printmaking with natural elements to create unique, personal prints.

Over the week, you will explore:

- Collagraph printing: building textured plates from card, paper, and natural materials
- Monoprinting techniques: one-off prints for experimentation and layering
- Ink application and layering for collagraph and mixed media prints
- Collage: integrating paper, natural materials, and mixed media elements
- Botanical pressing and natural materials: incorporating petals, leaves, and other textures into your prints
- Experimental techniques: stencils, stamps, embossing, and additive methods
- Developing a cohesive series of prints reflecting personal style, texture, and creativity.

The course provides a supportive, hands-on environment, encouraging experimentation, skill development, and creative expression inspired by nature. By the end of the week, you'll leave with a range of original prints, combining collagraph, monoprint, collage, and natural materials, with confidence to continue printmaking independently or in the studio.

July Summer School Courses are recommended for ages 16 years and above. Once you book your place, you'll receive an email with more details about the course nearer to the time.
