About
Our next meeting takes place on Saturday, 17th October.
Society member, John Norris, will present his talk, "The Medieval Cloister at Lacock Abbey: An heraldic detective story", based on his dissertation for The Heraldry Society Diploma. Lacock Abbey is today seen as a traditional country house noted as the home of the scientist and photographic pioneer Henry Fox Talbot, however the current house was built on the site of a prestigious Augustinian Abbey established in the early 13th century. The nunnery was founded by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, an important royal servant and magnate in the reign of King Henry III. Three sides of the medieval cloister survive to this day and are decorated with many bosses including 22 heraldic shields and badges. John's talk will explain how his research identified the shields and revealed a fascinating network of connections with many of the noble and landed families of Wiltshire and beyond.
