The story unfolds against the backdrop of a war waged in revenge by the mythical hero King Theseus of Athens on the King of Thebes, to restore the body of another felled king of ancient Greece to his widow.
Two noble princes of Thebes, while prisoners of war, both fall for Emilia, sister of King Theseus. While competing for Emilia's hand, they lock swords against their friendship.
Meanwhile, one of the captured princes caught the eye of their drunken jailer's daughter. The jailer and his brother enlist a local school mistress who has a cunning plan to cure the love-sick daughter.
Who will have a happily ever after? For whom will love conquer all? Who will win happiness and who will suffer in fortune's subtle game?
