About

Discover world-class collections spanning half a million years of human achievement at The Salisbury Museum – an award-winning independent museum housed in a magnificent Grade I listed medieval building, perfectly positioned opposite Salisbury Cathedral.

Must-see collections

Stonehenge and the Wessex Gallery of Archaeology See the Amesbury Archer – the most significant early Bronze Age burial ever discovered in Britain – alongside extraordinary finds from the World Heritage Site. Explore how Stonehenge fits into regional and chronological history through the fascinating Pitt-Rivers Wessex Collection, which tells the story of archaeology itself.

Constable and the Fine Art Collection A significant oil painting by John Constable, A View of Salisbury from Harnham, goes on public display for the first time in 200 years from June 2026 – a milestone that coincides with the 250th anniversary of the artist's birth. The painting will remain on long-term loan until 2030, displayed along with works by Turner, Rex Whistler and other celebrated British artists.

Potted History of Britain Over 4,000 pieces of English pottery and porcelain – including notable Wedgwood items and locally made crockery – are displayed in the magnificent King's Room. A 6,000-year journey through ceramics, from everyday domestic ware to historic tourist souvenirs.

Salisbury's Story From medieval times to today, discover the Drainage Collection (everyday items recovered from historic open sewers), St Christopher – Britain's oldest surviving medieval giant – and the Scout Motor Car. A fascinating window onto the city's social and industrial heritage.

Natural History Captivating fossils, plant specimens and taxidermy reveal Salisbury's natural story from the Jurassic period to the present.
