About
Is there a book inside you just waiting to be written? Stories from your life, community, or the world around that need to be told — but you're not quite sure where to begin? Or perhaps you already enjoy writing but would welcome more structure, inspiration, and a deeper understanding of the craft? If so, then Writing from Life is for you! A welcoming, small-group, one-day workshop at Fisherton Mill Gallery facilitated by Prof. Sam Parsley, a coach for research-led writers with 23 years' experience of publishing nonfiction and research-led writing.
The workshop is for anyone drawn to creative non-fiction—whether you're exploring memoir, travel writing, personal essays, local history, social commentary, or true stories shaped by lived experience. No prior experience is needed—just curiosity, a willingness to write, and a desire to find your voice.
In a supportive small group, we'll explore how to turn memory, observation, and research into compelling narratives. Through practical exercises, guided writing time, and clear, engaging tuition you'll gain tools to build strong story structures, create vivid scenes, and bring emotional depth and ethical awareness to your work. The day will also include guidance on editing and what to do with your material—whether you want to publish or simply write for yourself. We'll also look at the role of research in personal and place-based writing, how to develop a writing routine, and how to navigate the emotional challenges of storytelling—including imposter syndrome and writing about real people and events.
