About

STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway is housed in a beautifully restored Grade II listed railway building in the heart of the former Swindon railway works. Located right next to Swindon's Designer Outlet, the Museum tells the story of the men and women who built, operated and travelled on the Great Western Railway. See famous locomotives, ‘drive’ the train simulator and even work the signals in the interactive GWR signal box!

Trade Product Information and Experiences:

Free Introductory Welcome Group Talk (10-15 minutes) – suitable for groups who wish to self-guide but would like to have a brief talk on the background and history of the museum at the start of their visit. 

Highlights Tour: A one-hour tour of the Museum, focusing on the highlights of the STEAM collection. Learn about the history of Swindon Works and discover some of the stories of the workers. Tours are available for a minimum of 15 and maximum of 25 people, although for larger groups multiple tours can be arranged. Pre-booking essential.

Museum Entry - Adult £8.50; Senior (65+) £6.70; Child (3 - 15yrs) £6.15
Museum Entry plus Highlights Tour - Adult £12.20; Senior £10.40; Child £9.80
Min group size: 15 pax
Duration of visit: 2-3 hours

Suitable for Education / Corporate / Incentive visits:  Yes. 
Please enquire about the Discovery Sessions on offer for school groups, which include the Victorian era and World War Two.
Corporate visits are popular with a range of spaces available to hire. These include large event halls and a large theatre-style room with its own break-out area, plus smart GWR themed boardrooms - ideal for both occasional and regular meetings. Day and evening events available from business breakfasts through to evening gala dinners, parties and concerts. Special event catering also available.

Group Refreshments - Platform One Café inside the Museum offers a wide range of delicious meals and snacks. The Café is upstairs and accessible from the Museum reception area, including a visitor lift).

Road Directions

Follow the brown tourist signs for the Outlet Centre, Great Western Heritage Area, or the ‘M’ for STEAM Museum sign. STEAM can be found to the left of the Food Court entrance of the Outlet Centre. STEAM can also be reached through the ‘at home’ section of the Outlet Centre. Retain your admission ticket and claim free parking at the Outlet Centre car park. Details are available when visitors buy their admission tickets at STEAM.

Public Transport Directions

Walking from Swindon railway station – turn right outside the station and walk along Station Road towards Emlyn Square, staying on the right-hand side of the road. Walk through the second underpass on the right (GWR tunnel) and up the ramp at the end. Then follow the signposts to STEAM. This is a 10 to 15 minute walk.
