About
Join us here at The Wardrobe in Salisbury's Cathedral Close for a fascinating illustrated talk exploring the remarkable life and work of Sir Stanley Spencer, one of Britain's most distinctive and original artists.
Best known for his deeply personal and imaginative paintings, Spencer transformed his experiences of the First World War into one of the country's most extraordinary artistic achievements. Rather than depicting the conflict's violence and destruction, the paintings he created for the Chapel in the 1920s celebrate the quiet acts of care, routine and companionship that sustained people through the hardships of war.
Led by Heather Walkling (Operations Assistant, Sandham Memorial Chapel), the talk follows Spencer's journey from his service as a medical orderly at Beaufort Military Hospital in Bristol to the challenging conditions of Salonika (now in North Macedonia). Along the way, we'll discover how these experiences inspired his unique artistic vision and how Sandham Memorial Chapel preserves his legacy.
Whether you're discovering Spencer's work for the first time or returning with a deeper interest, this thought-provoking talk offers fresh insights into the artist, his wartime experiences, and the cultural importance of Sandham Memorial Chapel.
