Winter is well and truly here, and its a busy time of year in Wiltshire! With Christmas and New Year's Eve coming up at the end of the month, there are also plenty of other events to keep you busy throughout December. Get ready for whiskey tasting, family days out, art exhibitions, live music and winter walks this December. 

Christmas Time and Festive Events
Wondering what's on over Christmas? There are plenty of festive events coming up in Wiltshire this December. There will be pantomimes, craft workshops, carol concerts and visits from Santa. Some of the biggest and most eagerly anticipated Christmas events taking place in Wiltshire include Longleat's Festival of Light, Enchanted Christmas at Westonbirt Arboretum and the Ice Skating in Salisbury. But December isn't just about Christmas, and there are plenty of other activities, events and days out coming up in Wiltshire this month...

Crofton Beam Engines

December Days Out
Plan a fun day out with the family at one of these special events taking place in December! On 14 and 28 December, families can Meet the Railway Workers at STEAM, a fun opportunity to learn what it was like to work for the Great Western Railway as well as climbing onto the footplate of some of the trains. Have you been to Imber yet? This village on Salisbury Plain was evacuated in 1943 and remains empty to this day. Discover this fascinating place and visit pretty St Giles church during the Imber Open Days taking place from Friday 27 December to Wednesday 1 January this year. On Saturday 7 December, you can see behind the scenes and go on a guided tour at Crofton Beam Engines - home to the world's oldest working steam driven beam engines - at a special open day. 

Evening Entertainment
Time to book in an evening out for this December! Join the Scotch Malt Whisky Society for their Whisky Tasting Evening at Arundells house on Saturday 7 December. Or, on the same evening you can watch brand new comedy show Jimmy Carr - Terribly Funny in Salisbury. The end of the month will see some huge celebrations as Wiltshire celebrates New Years Eve. Celebrate the big night in style at New Year's Eve at Bowood Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort where you can choose between two brilliant black tie events. Or if you're in Chippenham, head to the New Year's Eve Angel Gala Dinner for a six course dinner and dancing until late.

Winter Walks
Get outside and go walking in a winter wonderland this December! There are lots of wonderful winter walks to enjoy around Wiltshire, including some guided walks around our timeless countryside. On 5 December, join National Trust archaeologist Dr Nick Snashall for a winter ramble around the stone circles at Avebury, exploring this fascinating and unique prehistoric landscape. On 19 December, you can blow away the cobwebs with a 4 mile midwinter archaeology walk around the Stonehenge Landscape with an expert guide. 

Art Exhibitions
Enjoy a dose of culture at one of the art exhibitions taking place around Wiltshire this month. Discover an array of printmaking, including lithographs, etchings, woodcuts and digital prints at Swindon Museum and Art Gallery's Hit Repeat exhibition. Meanwhile, Fisherton Mill's Main Gallery exhibition Spruce & Splendour runs until 4 January 2020, featuring a beautiful collection of paintings, crafts and artwork from talented local and national makers.

Classical Concerts
Enjoy music by Vivaldi, Brahms, Tchaikovsky performed live on Thursday 5 November with Trio Paradis: Winter Warmers, a free lunchtime concert in Trowbridge. Later in the month, Handel's Messiah will be performed at Salisbury Cathedral by the City of London Sinfonia and the Choir of Salisbury Cathedral. This is a lovely opportunity to enjoy a live performance of one of the best-known and most popular choral works in one of Wiltshire's most iconic and beautiful buildings.
