Saturday 26th of September 2026, will see a special evening steaming and star gazing event at Crofton Beam Engines. Our two beam engines will be in steam late into the evening. With lower than normal lighting in our engine house, it will give an impression of Crofton in the Georgian era when the Beam Engines first operated.
Crofton is in a 'dark skies' area, so to help us celebrate our evening steaming, local astronomers will have their telescopes set up for visitors to marvel at the heavens (weather permitting!). Richard Fleet will give one of his popular presentations during the evening entitled "How Old Are We"? Raising some interesting questions about what age really means with a view to just how old we really are. The lecture will be repeated over 2 sessions. The first lecture at 7pm and the second at 8pm, so you will have plenty of opportunity to see our engines working and to take in the talk.
Once it is dark there will be plenty of opportunity to view the night sky. It will be a full moon so views of some of the fainter objects will be reduced. Please dress warmly and bring binoculars.
Our Smithy Tea Room will be open during the evening.
